Exess Sweating

Excessive Sweating, medically known as Hyperhidrosis, affects several million people. It interferes with enjoyment of life as much as kidney disease, arthritis or multiple sclerosis. Although it regularly soils clothes, disrupts social activities and limits advancement, most people with Hyperhidrosis fail to bring the condition to the attention of their health care provider.

Two to four million sweat glands pepper the surface of the skin with the majority localizing under the arm, about the palms and soles and on the forehead. The primary problem resides in over-activity of the nerves while the glands themselves appear normal. Sweating ceases during sleep with continuous perspiration punctuated by bouts of massive drenching sweating during the day. Worsening frequently results from emotionally stressful situations, exercise, spicy or hot foods, summer temperature spikes and high humidity. Many episodes appear without warning and for no apparent reason.

Primary Idiopathic Hyperhidrosis may be genetically transmitted and begins during childhood or with passage through puberty. It continues indefinitely. Secondary Hyperhidrosis develops later in life and may be related to a variety of underlying causes. Possible explanations include menopause, diabetes, an overactive thyroid, alcohol abuse, drug withdrawal or injury to a peripheral nerve. Heart failure, respiratory disease and certain infections may also be at fault.

Treatment obviously entails avoiding any identifiable causative factor. Therapy generally begins with simple topical solutions such as Drysol or Certain Dri. If these fail to produce the desired results, then injections of Botox into the affected skin reduces sweating by more than 85% within one week. This safe, simple and effective therapy seems equally effective for the axilla, palms, soles or forehead. One quick session may provide benefits averaging 6-12 months.

An alternative approach involves cutting the sympathetic nerves in the chest. Usually performed through a small instrument, Endoscopic Thoracic Sympathectomy or ETS may be quite effective. Unfortunately too many unwanted and unpredictable complications result for this to be considered a standard option.

IPL - Photo-Facial

Protection from the sun for several weeks before treatment remains the only preparation necessary. To minimize the possibility of bruising, blood thinners such as coumadin must be avoided for several days. Therapy should be delayed until healing of cold sores.

To maintain the benefits you should consider minimizing exposure to the sun by proper application of sunscreens and clothing. With the inevitable march of time the aging process continues to extract a toll; periodic touch up treatments may be necessary.

Babies smooth and soft skin stems from high concentrations of Hyaluronic Acid in the layer immediately under the surface - the dermis. As we age the body produces less of this substance while its breakdown continues unchecked. Unfortunately age also brings with it loss of other scaffolding and support further compounding the tendency to wrinkling.

Placing Restylane immediately into the unwanted areas restores the natural hyaluronic acid content and both draws and binds tissue fluid. As a bonus, Restylane additionally may be used to plump and augment the lips, erase those indentations at the angles of the mouth and fill in scars from acne or injury. Small amounts may reduce creases between the eyes and on the forehead remaining after Botox therapy.

Side effects remain infrequent. Injections may lead to slight swelling or redness but this generally fades within a day or two. As with any injection, bruising may appear; this can be hidden with makeup. Topical numbing creams or at times local anesthetics minimize any discomfort.

Some confusion still exists between Botox and fillers such as Restylane. Botox relaxes muscles without adding volume to the skin. Generally its target areas include the areas between the eyebrows, the forehead and the crow's feet. Fillers such as Restylane add material to the skin and typically fill in wrinkles on the lower part of the face - especially around the mouth and nose. Other fillers include fat, collagen and a variety of less well studied materials. None offers the unique combination of safety, effectiveness and longevity as the Hyaluronic Acid preparations.

Radiesse
